A documented chain: the 1948 Nakba, when roughly 750,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled amid dozens of massacres and the depopulation of some 400 towns and villages — what Ilan Pappé's *The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine* and even Benny Morris call ethnic cleansing; the 1967 Naksa expulsion of up to 325,000 more; the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre; the Gaza blockade and 2014 war; and above all the 2023–present Gaza war, now characterized as genocide by a broad consensus of genocide scholars.

## ICJ: South Africa's case and evidence of genocide claims

South Africa filed its case — an application instituting proceedings before the International Court of Justice on 29 December 2023 — concerning alleged violations of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (*South Africa v. Israel*). On 26 January 2024 the ICJ found the genocide claims "plausible" and ordered provisional measures; on 28 October 2024 South Africa delivered its full Memorial of evidence supporting those claims, evidence that underpins the genocide claims now before the court.

## UN reports: war crimes and genocide in Gaza

UN reports conclude Israel committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. On 12 June 2024 a UN Commission of Inquiry found the "immense" scale of killings amounts to a crime against humanity; OHCHR's Commission found war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Occupied Palestinian Territory amid continuing genocide, and the UN special rapporteur concluded the legal threshold for genocide was met. Dismissing this evidence as "bureaucratic fiction" ignores Genocide Watch's documented tactics of denial — and dehumanizing official rhetoric ("human animals," the Amalek invocation).
