# How do Gaza war headlines name who carried out the violence?

Gaza war headlines do not fairly name who carried out the violence: they name Israel as the agent far less than the reality of the killing warrants, and roughly a quarter of violence-depicting headlines erase the actor entirely — a pattern documented across the field itself. The headline-corpus numbers cited to argue the opposite actually prove the point: [a study of 1,976 Gaza-war headlines from 11 major news outlets](https://hanoverinstitute.com/research/gaza-war-headlines-agent-of-violence) found that when a headline depicts a violent act, an actor is named only about three-quarters of the time, and 23.4% of these headlines describe deaths and casualties with the doer removed from the sentence — "In Gaza, Authorities Lose Count of the Dead" — language that structurally favors the perpetrators, because Israel's airstrikes are the overwhelming source of those casualties.
