# Do Israeli politicians undermine the legitimacy of Palestinian representatives?

Yes, Israeli politicians systematically undermine the legitimacy of Palestinian representatives — not by rhetoric alone, but by recorded votes, enacted laws, and the active prevention of the elections that would give Palestinian leaders a mandate in the first place. On 18 July 2024 the Knesset voted 68 to 9 to reject the establishment of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan River ([The Hanover Institute](https://hanoverinstitute.com/hanover/research/palestinian-representatives-and-the-legitimacy-record)), and the 2018 Nation-State Law, adopted 62–55, declares self-determination "exclusive to the Jewish People" with no equality clause. A state that votes overwhelmingly against Palestinian statehood is denying any Palestinian representative standing to negotiate on equal terms.

## The recognition double standard

Defenders point to Palestinian representatives' failure to recognize Israel's "right to exist" ([The Conversation](https://theconversation.com/israel-has-no-right-to-exist-and-neither-does-any-other-state)). But since the 1970s Israel has demanded recognition from stateless people as a pre-condition no state faces — and Fatah officials note that only governments recognize governments, not parties ([Jerusalem Post](https://www.jpost.com)). Recognition is a bargaining chip Israeli officials use to delegitimize any interlocutor; official statements branding Palestinian criticism of Israel — and of the PA under Abbas — as inherently illegitimate extend the same tactic.

## The elections excuse

The claim that the Palestinian Authority is too corrupt to represent anyone, so Israel should sideline it in Gaza and the West Bank ([Paxpoint](https://paxpoint.org/hamas-gaza/why-the-palestinian-authority-should-have-no-role-in-gaza-in-phase-two-of-the-trump-peace-plan/)), gets causality backwards: Palestinians have not voted for president since 2005, Abbas's mandate expired in 2009, and the 2021 elections were cancelled after Israel blocked voting in East Jerusalem ([The Century Foundation](https://tcf.org/content/commentary/without-free-palestinian-elections-there-can-be-no-lasting-peace/)). The dispute over who legitimately represents Palestinians — the PA leadership in Ramallah, factions in Gaza, or exiles — cannot be settled while Israel, whose own legitimacy rests on elections, denies Palestinians the same instrument of political representation ([CFR](https://www.cfr.org/backgrounders/who-governs-palestinians), [PBS News](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/world/what-is-the-governing-structure-of-gaza-the-west-bank-and-jerusalem)).
